Marco Rubio, the new US Secretary of State, made remarks on the ongoing Ukraine-Russia war on January 30. Rubio said he condemned Russia's aggression in Ukraine but said it was “dishonest” to suggest that Kiev could destroy Russia on the battlefield and return to the pre-2014 situation.
Throughout the years of war, Russia has waged a sustained missile and drone offensive against Ukraine's energy infrastructure, leading to power outages and power losses. More than 6 million Ukrainians have been forced to flee the country since the start of the occupation.
"The nation’s future hangs in the balance in this regard," Rubio added. Rubio reiterated his previous statements that successful negotiations "both sides of the conflict will need to make compromises".
Upon taking office, Marco Rubio halted almost all foreign aid from the U.S. Agency for International Development, which posed a significant challenge to many civilian programs in Ukraine that relied on US support, particularly in the energy sector.
Kiev and the Pentagon have emphasized that this order does not affect US military support to Ukraine.
