US Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken and Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan signed the Armenia-United States Strategic Partnership Agreement on January 14, 2025 in Washington.

The agreement promotes cooperation on issues such as mutual assistance and reform in the economic and military sectors. The charter also includes articles on democracy, territorial integrity and sovereignty.

The agreement does not include a clause requiring direct US military intervention in the event of an armed conflict in Armenia.

Armenia's move to strengthen its ties with the United States comes on the heels of a foreign policy shift, particularly after Russia and the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) failed to respond to Armenia's requests for military assistance after the Azerbaijani army entered Armenian territory in late 2022.

In response to the U.S.-Armenia strategic partnership, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated, "The United States has never played a particularly stabilizing role in the South Caucasus—one could even say the opposite. In the context of these 'opposite' actions, the U.S. is certainly trying in every possible way to pull more and more countries into its wake. But this is the absolutely sovereign right of our Armenian friends."
