Circassian Nationalist Movement

The Jamestown Foundation, a US think tank based in Washington DC, examined in detail the impact of Ukraine's recognition of the Circassian Genocide on the Circassian nation. Here is a brief summary of the article:

Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada passed a resolution recognizing Russia’s actions in Circassia between 1763 and 1864 as genocide. The resolution states that these actions meet the criteria of genocide under the UN Convention and honors the victims while supporting the Circassian diaspora’s right to return to their homeland and achieve national self-determination.

The Circassian national movement aims to rebuild a Circassian state, gain international recognition of the genocide, facilitate the return of the diaspora to their homeland, and unite the divided Circassian nation. Ukraine’s resolution significantly advances these goals, with Circassian activists planning to seek similar declarations from other countries.

Although some Circassian groups opposed the decision, these groups are suspected of being influenced by Russian intelligence. Moscow is expected to increase its repression of Circassian activists, both domestically and abroad, which could radicalize the movement further. Ukraine’s resolution is seen as a critical step in strengthening the Circassian cause and challenging Moscow’s policies.
